Equal Sharing Fractions Activity for Special Education - Grade 2 Math
Fractions Activities for Special Ed
Do you have a special education student who is on modified Grade 2 math? It can be challenging to teach curriculum to students at a higher grade level because resources online are limited. I wanted to help solve this issue and create fun hands-on math activities that focus on the Grade 2 Fractions learning expectations!
Equal Sharing Fractions
Fair-sharing or equal-sharing means that quantities are shared equally. For a whole to be shared equally, it must be partitioned so that each sharer receives the same amount.
Teaching Strategies for Equal Sharing Fractions
Looking for a hands-on Grade 2 equal sharing activity for your special education class? Students will love these cute task cards that include visuals of commonly preferred items like cookies, police cars and pizza! Students will look at the visuals of images then equally share them among the number of sharers. Then they will put a clothes peg on the correct number. This can be done 1:1, in a small group or even as an independent work task. Sometimes it can be tricky teaching fair sharing among numbers that do not equally divide into each other. So these task cards are great to ease them into the fraction concepts! You can begin with giving the students the task cards with visual prompts! These prompts include circles that indicate how much of each object, each sharer will receive.
Example...
Equally share 10 cookies among 6 glasses of milk.
The answer is 1 2/3.
This activity comes with 34 task cards that focus on fair sharing between 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 sharers. There are 17 task cards with visual prompts (circles) and 17 task cards without visual prompts. I suggest starting the the visual prompts, then when your student is proficient at it, I would swap it with the other task cards. This way students can practice drawing their own circles to divide the items among the sharers.
Sometimes this can be a challenging concept when sharing among numbers that do not equally divide into themselves. This is why the visual circles make it easier to understand
