Sorting 2D shapes and 3D shapes based on 1 attribute

In the Grade 1 math unit on Geometric and Spatial Reasoning, young learners embark on an exciting exploration of the world of shapes and dimensions. The focus of this unit revolves around sorting 2D and 3D shapes based on a single attribute, offering an engaging and accessible introduction to the fundamental concepts of geometry. Through hands-on activities, colorful visuals, and interactive exercises, students begin to grasp the distinction between two-dimensional shapes like triangles and squares and their three-dimensional counterparts like cubes and spheres. By honing their ability to identify and classify these shapes according to shared attributes, students not only develop a solid foundation in geometry but also cultivate essential skills in critical thinking, pattern recognition, and problem-solving that will serve them well throughout their mathematical journey. This unit sparks the curiosity of young minds, setting the stage for a deeper understanding of the world of shapes and space in the years to come.

Activities on sorting 2D & 3D shapes

Are you looking for a fun grade 1 geometry activity for special education or modified grade 1 math? This activity comes with 27 different task cards that focus on sorting 2D shapes and sorting 3D shapes! These task cards focus on sorting shapes based on 1 attribute or sorting rule. Students will practice selecting which shape fits the sorting rule. Once they have mastered this, they will practice selecting a sorting rule based on a group of two-dimensional or three-dimensional shapes.

Easy Prep!

  • Print (I suggest 2-4 slides per page so it is task card size)

  • Cut around each task card

  • Laminate so it can be reused year after year!

  • Cut again

TA DA! You are done! Now you have a brand new math task card activity that you can reuse year after year, student after student!

How to use this activity

This activity comes with 27 different task cards and 2 differentiated options that helps students truly grasp the concepts of sorting shapes based on a single attribute. These 2 options are as follows:

Select which shape fits the sorting rule:

For example, students will see a group of shapes, and a sorting rule. Then they will select which shape fits the sorting rule among 3 options! They will use a clothes peg to decide on their answer.

Select what the sorting rule is

For example, students will see a group of shapes. Then they will decide what sorting rule works with all of the shapes displayed, among 3 options of sorting rules. They will use a clothes peg to decide on their answer.

This activity is based off of the The Ontario Curriculum: Mathematics, Geometric and Spatial Reasoning Unit.

Curriculum expectations met in this resource

  • E1.1 sort three-dimensional shapes and two-dimensional shapes according to one attribute at a time, and identify the sorting rule being used
